MoneySky vs Spendee: When Budgeting Alone Isn't Enough Anymore

Anton

Maybe you started with Spendee a few years ago. You wanted to see where your money was going, set a budget or two, maybe share a wallet with your partner. Spendee has been great at that since 2013 and three million people agree.

But then your financial life got more complicated. You bought some ETFs on eToro. Maybe you picked up a few freelance clients on the side and suddenly you are invoicing people, tracking business expenses, and wondering whether you should register as OSVČ or set up an s.r.o. Spendee does not have answers for any of that because it was never designed to.

That is where MoneySky comes in. We are a new platform built in Prague in 2025. We are built for the full journey: from your first investment to your first invoice and everything that comes after.

What Spendee does well (and we will be honest about it)

Spendee is a beautiful, well made personal budgeting app. The mobile experience is polished iOS and Android apps that feel native and fast. Shared wallets let couples and families track spending together, which is a genuinely useful feature that MoneySky does not currently offer. The AI receipt scanner works well for personal expenses. And with a free tier that gives you one wallet and one budget, you can get started without paying anything.

If your financial life starts and ends with "I want to spend less on takeout," Spendee is a perfectly good choice. It connects to around 2,000 banks, the interface is intuitive, and at $5.99 per month for Premium (roughly 150 Kč), it is affordable.

We have no interest in pretending otherwise.

Where things start to break down

The problem with Spendee appears the moment your financial life crosses a boundary. And for a growing number of people especially in the Czech digital economy those boundaries are crossed fast.

You start investing. You open an eToro account, buy a few ETFs, maybe some individual stocks. Spendee cannot see any of it. Your investments exist in a completely separate world from your spending. You have no unified view of your net worth, just a budgeting app that knows about your bank account and a brokerage app that knows about your portfolio. MoneySky connects to your brokerage and shows your investments alongside your bank accounts, your spending and everything else in one dashboard.

You start freelancing. You land your first client, send your first invoice, and suddenly you are in business territory. You need to track which invoices are paid, manage business expenses separately from personal ones, and keep an eye on your VAT threshold. Spendee has nothing for this. You would need to sign up for Fakturoid or iDoklad alongside Spendee – two subscriptions, two logins, two separate worlds of data. MoneySky handles invoicing natively, with automatic bank payment matching. When your client pays, the platform sees the incoming transaction and marks the invoice as paid. Your business cash flow and personal finances live side by side.

You need to think about taxes. Should you stay as OSVČ with the 15 % flat tax, or would an s.r.o. save you money at your income level? What is your rolling VAT threshold looking like, are you approaching that 2,000,000 Kč limit? MoneySky has a tax structure optimizer that compares scenarios based on your actual numbers, monitors your VAT threshold in real time, and generates accountant ready exports. Spendee does not even know you have a business.

The real cost comparison

At first glance, Spendee looks cheaper. Premium costs $5.99 per month (about €5.50), while MoneySky is €7.99 per month. But that comparison only holds if budgeting is all you need.

The moment you add a second tool such as Fakturoid's Firma plan at 211 Kč per month for invoicing you are already paying around 360 Kč per month for the combination. MoneySky's single subscription covers both for roughly 200 Kč per month. And that is before counting a separate investment dashboard.

What we do not have yet

We are a new platform, and we believe in being upfront about that. MoneySky is currently web only; we do not have native iOS or Android apps yet. If checking your budget at the grocery store on your phone is a daily habit, Spendee's mobile experience is more mature. We also do not have shared wallets for couples, which is one of Spendee's best features.

These are things we are aware of and actively working on. But right now, if mobile is a dealbreaker for you, Spendee wins that round.

So who is MoneySky actually for?

We built MoneySky for people whose financial lives do not fit in a single category. You are not just a "budgeter" or just an "investor" or just a "freelancer." You are someone who started tracking spending, then opened a brokerage account, then landed a few clients, and now you are running a growing digital business while trying to figure out the smartest tax structure.

Spendee is a great first chapter. MoneySky is the platform that grows with you through all the chapters that come after.

If you are still in the "track my coffee spending" phase, Spendee is probably all you need. But if you have outgrown that and your finances now span personal spending, investments, invoicing and Czech tax compliance, MoneySky puts it all in one place. One subscription. One login. One complete picture of your financial life.
